Cloud migration : update

5 décembre 2024 | ACTUALITÉS, Cigref in english, Communiqués

After two years of work on cloud migration, from 2020 to 2022, Cigref took a break from the subject. The aim of this pause was to allow organisations to continue with their migration programme and to gather updated, clear and constructive feedback the following year. So, as we approach the end of 2024, this report, « Migration to the cloud: where we are now », looks at the issues raised by the cloud once migration has begun, is underway or has been completed.

Cloud migration is much more than a technological evolution. It represents a fundamental shift in the way organisations think about hosting, data management and the delivery of digital services. Driven by the promise of agility, flexibility and cost reduction, this transformation is overturning operating models that have been in place for decades.
But while the dominant discourse tends to celebrate the cloud as a universal solution, the reality is often more nuanced. And while some organisations are embarking on full cloud projects, others are proceeding more cautiously and purposefully.
In this report, we explore the promises of the cloud by comparing them with the real-life experiences of CIGREF member companies. We ask a key question: should everything be moved to the cloud, or do certain workloads still have a place in traditional on-premises or datacenter infrastructures? Despite the undeniable benefits, there are still technical, economic, regulatory and organisational barriers that require more in-depth strategic thinking.
Moving to the cloud also presents complex technological and organisational challenges. How can we effectively manage this transition by optimising workloads? How can we ensure smooth adoption across all the teams and departments involved? With this in mind, we will look at both the technical aspects, such as managing landing zones, and the human dimensions, through training, team support and the importance of internal sponsorship.
Feedback from major players such as TotalEnergies, Covéa, Amadeus, Super U and Air France-KLM will enrich this discussion by illustrating the successes and pitfalls encountered in the field.
The aim of the report is to provide a balanced analysis of cloud migration based on the experiences of our members, taking into account both the opportunities and the limitations, in order to help businesses make informed decisions as they embark on their digital transformation.
